August starts the way Madrid likes it best: half-empty. The people who stay behind get a different city, one where a sixteenth-century cloister can host two of the country's best flamenco names on consecutive nights without anyone needing to fight for a ticket.
This week that emptiness works in your favour twice over: a world premiere ballet gala in Conde Duque's courtyard while half the audience it might otherwise have drawn is at the coast, and the first of the summer's great street parties opening in the Rastro with the neighbourhood still outnumbering the visitors.
We did the work of finding the ones worth staying in town for, so you don't have to sift through a hundred listings to land on the ones that matter.

The room buys you more than the music does
Solo flamenco guitar in one of the most beautiful courtyards in the historic centre, a sixteenth-century school cloister most people walk past on Calle Toledo without ever seeing inside. De Morón is a guitarist's guitarist, the name aficionados drop when they want to sound serious.

Anyone whose flamenco experience so far amounts to a tablao with a drinks minimum.

Voice and guitar, nothing else, and the best tickets in Madrid this month
Sandra Carrasco is one of the finest cantaoras of her generation. David de Arahal is the guitarist the flamenco world currently can't stop talking about, the name critics reach for when they want to say the tradition is in safe hands. Just voice and guitar, in a candlelit cloister, for fifteen euros.

Opera's greatest hits, performed by people who've perfected the controlled breakdown
A physical-comedy company thirty years into perfecting the art of the controlled breakdown, taking on opera's greatest hits with genuine musicality underneath the mess. The rare night out that works for a mixed table, couples, families with older children, and the person who always claims they don't like opera.

The Botánico season's final Friday belongs to reggae
The closing night of a decade of Noches del Botánico, reggae roots meeting Madrid heat on the last Friday of the season. Endings this deliberate are rare in a festival calendar; this one has earned the word.

A world premiere built for a half-empty August
A world premiere made expressly for the festival, fronted by Joaquín De Luz, the Madrid-born former New York City Ballet principal, alongside violinist Vasko Vassilev and soloists from the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. A gala format, so a run of showpieces rather than one long work, but the pairing of dance and live violin at this level is rare outside a proper opera house.

Take the Sunday. It sits in the dead first weekend of August when the city empties out, so you get world-class dance in a half-deserted Madrid, which is the best Madrid there is.

The reader who stayed in town for August on purpose.

Anyone allergic to highlight reels. Gala programmes jump between excerpts; wait for a full production in autumn if that's not for you.

Free, generous, and quietly devastating, for anyone who hasn't been yet
If you haven't been yet, August is the moment. The first major González-Torres show in Madrid, free and generous, with the candy spills genuinely yours to take. The Reina Sofía runs quieter in August than at any other point in the year, which makes this the best month to see it properly.

Go now, before the school-year crowds return in September. Give the candy pieces time; they work slowly.
For who it is
Contemporary art followers, anyone who missed it in July, and August visitors filling a free afternoon.
For who it is not
Anyone expecting painting or decoration. This is conceptual work and it asks you to sit with it.

The neighbourhood still outnumbers the visitors, and that won't last
Madrid's castizo high season begins here: San Cayetano in the Rastro, the first of three August verbenas running nearly unbroken to La Paloma on the 15th. Paper garlands over the streets, chotis and limonada, a tradition running since the nineteenth century in the same few blocks. Opening night is the connoisseur's pick, the streets are dressed but not yet rammed.

Two things happen this Wednesday, Silvia Superstar plays free in Hortaleza and the verbena opens in the Rastro. Pick your Madrid, or do the gig first and land in Embajadores before midnight; the verbena will still be going.
For who it is
Anyone who wants to see the tradition at its most local, before the weekend crowds and the bigger sisters that follow.
For who it is not
Anyone who saves themselves for La Paloma. This is the smaller, scrappier overture.

A circus show that earns its ticket price
Cirqueando's summer circus tour reaches its only ticketed night in the Sierra's mountain gardens, meaning more production than the free dates elsewhere in the run. A genuine reason to leave the city for an evening rather than just an excuse.

Make it a whole evening in Miraflores, not a there-and-back. The drive alone is worth it once the heat breaks.
For who it is
Families, Sierra weekenders, and anyone who wants to close out July with something magical under a mountain sky.

The Killer Barbies frontwoman, a genuine nineties Spanish punk cult figure, playing a free open-air date in a district park. This is Veranos de la Villa doing what it does best: putting a proper name where nobody expects one.

Hortaleza is a hike from the centre, so make it a whole evening. Terraza first, gig after, last metro back on línea 4.
For who it is
Readers bored of the same three central venues and up for a Wednesday with an edge.
For who it is not
Anyone who hears punk in a park and thinks of the neighbours' fiestas del barrio. Fair, but this one has pedigree.
ON THE HORIZON
The verbenas continue. San Lorenzo opens in Lavapiés on 9 August, and La Paloma, the biggest of the three, lands on the 15th. If San Cayetano is the overture, the next fortnight is where the season peaks.
