Madrid in late August settles into its own rhythm: terraces stay full past midnight, the Retiro empties by noon heat, and the city seems to exhale after the summer rush. It's the kind of week where nothing feels urgent, which is exactly why it's worth paying attention.
Two things happening this week won't happen again. José Maldonado closes out his cloister performances for good, and Kill Bill Part Two gets its last outdoor screening at Cibeles before the summer cinema season wraps.
Everything this week is worth your evening. These two are worth planning around.

Dancers in the galleries during the hottest hour of the afternoon
The city drops flamenco performers into seven museums during the hottest stretch of the day, so four in the afternoon in August turns into something worth doing rather than something to survive. Lisi Sfair, La Moneta, Ofelia Márquez, Cintya Cano and others rotate through the bill. The run closes on Wednesday 26.
The Edit Move
Our pick is Friday 21 August, 15:00, at Museo de Historia de Madrid with Patricia Donn. Entry is free and the room rarely fills, so you can stand close enough to see the footwork. Reina Sofía and the Colecciones Reales are strong too, but both come with a ticket and a bigger crowd.

The cloister's last night, and a painting appears while he dances
Maldonado performs four solo scenes built around Falla, Lorca, Dalí and Carmen Amaya, painting live on stage as he moves through each one. It closes out ten straight weeks of the cloister's programme, the run that has quietly been Madrid's most reliable summer stage since early July.
The Edit Move
Eat first, since the cloister has no bar worth the name and the show runs 50 minutes with no interval. Sit left of centre, where the columns don't cut the sightline to the easel, and you're back on the street by 22:30 with La Latina two minutes downhill.

Anyone who has followed the cloister all August and wants one last night in it before the courtyard shuts for the year.
For who it is not
Anyone after a straight flamenco recital. This leans further into contemporary performance and makes no apology for it.

The biggest green space in the city, and it will feel like it’s all yours
Madrid's largest park empties out by late August, which makes it the rare free plan that gets better the longer summer drags. Walk down as the light drops, past the lake and the pine cover that keeps the temperature several degrees below the street.

Take the children down to the lake for the rowing boats before the kiosks close, then walk back up through the pines (or take a bike).
For who it is
Families still in Madrid this week who want space rather than a ticketed plan, and anyone who wants proof the city still has room to breathe.

Thirty years of family and fashion, closing before September
Chetrit's first institutional show in Spain runs almost three decades of her own photography together in one hang. Family, self portraiture, fashion campaigns for LOEWE, all treated with the same raw, staged unease. It closes at the end of the month, and the museum only opens mornings through August.

Entrance is free 14 to 15h. Pair it upstairs with the permanent Goya and Bosch rooms for the contrast between the house's old collection and this one.
For who it is
Photography readers and anyone who's exhausted the big three museums and wants a serious show in Salamanca instead.
For who it is not
Anyone wanting classical or historical work as the main event. This is a contemporary intervention inside that kind of house.

A young Madrid pianist drags the San Isidro cloister into 1970s funk
Daniel López, who plays as Donny, first got noticed at fifteen with Rice and Groove and took the Enlace Funk prize for best new group in 2021. This project puts him at the piano with a full horn and percussion section and three singers, Astrid Jones, Xiluba Tomas and Amos Obasohan. The material sits between jazz, soul, funk and neosoul, with Cuban and New York edges. No language barrier, which is rare for this venue's programme.
The Edit Move
Doors open half an hour early and almost nobody uses it. That half hour is the only time the public gets to stand in a 1672 arcade belonging to the oldest school in Spain with nothing happening in it. Walk the four sides first, pick a seat under the arches rather than centre, and let the brass come off the stone at you.

The reader who arrived in Madrid expecting flamenco and has quietly been hoping for horns.

Someone who wants to recognise the songs before the band starts playing.
THEATRE

Puppets for grown ups, after dark in the Retiro, and all of it free
The municipal puppet theatre in the Retiro runs an international festival every August, and most of the evening bill is aimed at adults, not children. República Tóxica del Títere Degenerado opens it on Thursday with improvised puppetry built from audience suggestions. Compagnie Ueueue, from France and Italy, bring a thirty minute Pulcinella piece on Sunday 23 August told almost entirely through accordion, song and puppet dance. Teatro saco de huesos close the week on Wednesday 26 August with two short string marionette works. Free tickets go live on the theatre's own site two days before each show at 10:00 h.
Language note: the opening night improv and the Monday piece run in Spanish. The French and Italian nights carry next to no dialogue.
The Edit Move
Take the Sunday 19:00 sitting rather than the late one. Thirty minutes of Pulcinella giving birth to an egg full of small Pulcinellas and one baby crocodile lands very differently when you walk out into a Retiro that's emptying and still warm, so cut across to the Palacio de Cristal afterwards instead of straight back to Avenida de México.
For who it is
Anyone whose relationship with puppetry stopped at about age nine and has not been offered a reason to revisit it.
For who it is not
The theatregoer who needs a cast and a text. There are no actors here, only hands and objects.

The pain nobody believed, staged inside a house built to romanticise it
Abril installs fragmented portraits of people living with endometriosis inside a nineteenth century mansion furnished for fainting and swooning, and the building does half her argument for her. Part of PHotoESPAÑA's official section, free, and the sharpest curatorial decision going in Madrid this summer.
The Edit Move
Walk the permanent rooms first, slowly, before reaching the installation. In that order it lands like an accusation. Do it the other way round and the building's own furniture loses its point entirely.
For who it is
Readers who want photography that argues rather than decorates, and anyone who's never had their pain taken seriously by a doctor.
For who it is not
Anyone after a pretty hour in a period house. This deliberately spoils that, which is why it works.

The half of Kill Bill you were never meant to see this way
Tarantino's own cut joins both volumes into one film and restores the House of Blue Leaves fight to colour, and it has never had an official release anywhere. Part Two screens under the glass roof at Cibeles, subtitled, one week after Part One played the same slot.
The Edit Move
Watch Vol. 1 again beforehand if you can. The Cannes cut splits the story in a different place from the DVD version, and arriving on old knowledge drops you into the middle of a scene that plays differently here. Sit near the back, the glass roof stays visible above the screen once night falls.
For who it is
Anyone who's meant to see the combined cut for years and never found it through official channels.
For who it is not
Anyone bringing someone who hasn't seen Part One. This does not stand alone.
ON THE HORIZON
27 August The Flamin' Groovies bring their vintage garage-rock swagger to Sala El Sol, one of the last small-venue nights before the city's live music calendar shifts into autumn mode.
29 August, free Orquesta y Coro de RTVE perform an ABBA Sinfónico set at Parque Enrique Tierno Galván. Symphonic strings meet disco hits under open sky, the kind of free night that turns a park into a dance floor.
1 to 7 September La Melonera arrives in Arganzuela to close out summer the way Madrid always does: with a verbena. Details are still firming up, but consider this your advance notice to keep the week open.
