THE EDITORIAL
This week the city splits its attention between the very old and the very new. A French circus troupe builds a junk shop out of hanging coats inside the Circo Price. A Tuareg desert blues band plays one of Madrid's classic rock venues. And on Wednesday, the Teatro Real reopens its main stage with Manon Lescaut, an opera that has not been performed there in over a century, with a fantastic cast.

A small-room double bill pairing flamenco's rawest end with the electronic Colombian sound Kumbé has built its reputation on. Neither act is chasing crossover appeal, and that's exactly why it works.

Go for the whole night rather than one act. Rooms this size don't clear between sets, and the crowd carries straight through.

Anyone who wants dance floor energy without a queue or a cover charge that punishes you for showing up.

Three nights of L.E.V. sold out before the newsletter landed. The free half did not.
The opening night, the Spanish premiere of Last and First Men by Neon Dance with 16 mm film and Tilda Swinton narrating, went first, and Friday and Saturday followed.
What is left is the better half anyway: Riccardo Giovinetto's H U M I in Cineteca's Sala Plató, Puppet by 1024 Architecture with Vitalic in the Taller, and Initi's Playground in Nave Una, all free across four days. Suso Saiz plays the plaza twice on Friday for nothing. A Long Goodbye, the Belgian VR piece about dementia that won its prize at the last Venice Biennale, is 9 euros.
The Edit Move
Do it in reverse order to everyone else. Start in the Sala Plató in daylight when H U M I is empty and you get the room to yourself, cross to the Taller, then be standing in Plaza Matadero for the 21:00 Suso Saiz set rather than the 19:00 one, when the brick has cooled and the courtyard is full.
Also if you’ve missed (or want to see again) Carlos Aires’s joyous/addictive/compelling installation in Nave 0. The inauguration last week was incredible, we’re still buzzing from it.
For who it is
Anyone who assumes the good Matadero programming is behind a wall.
For who it is not
The person who wants one headliner and one start time, not four days of rooms to wander.
THEATRE
THE EVENT: Bêtes de Foire, "Décrochez-moi-ça"

Bêtes de Foire brings three nights of circus-theatre to Teatro Circo Price, the one venue in Madrid built for exactly this
Circus-theatre built around the old fairground "human curiosities" tradition, staged in the one Madrid venue whose architecture was designed for exactly this kind of performance. This one is a quartet with live musicians on violin, guitar, keys and scavenged percussion, staged with the gestural language of silent film: stacked coats, hats worked by a man who is himself being worked, bodies swinging overhead. Three nights only.
The Edit Move
Buy the closest seats the Price will sell you. Everything on stage is hand sewn, hand carved or hand welded at a scale meant to be read from two metres, so distance flattens the craft rather than the drama.
For who it is
Anyone who loves Keaton and Tati and has never thought of circus as an art form with a canon.
For who it is not
Anyone who wants scale, height and danger. This is four people, a heap of old coats, and nothing built to look daring.

The singer of Lagartija Nick went to northern Morocco to learn gnawa. Two nights at Conde Duque to hear what came back.
Madrid premiere. Antonio Arias, of 091 and Lagartija Nick, has been working on this since 2018 with Moncho Rodríguez, and here he plays guembri alongside Arafa Chaara, Mouhamed Channa and Laarbi Laaroussi. Gnawa came out of people enslaved in central Africa and taken north, and the whole form is built on ritual repetition rather than songs, which is why seventy minutes passes the way it does. Sung in Arabic.
The Edit Move
Sit low and towards the centre. The guembri is a bass instrument and the kraqeb sit above it as metal clatter, and from the back rows the two collapse into one texture and the trance stops doing its work.

The reader who has heard gnawa in Essaouira and never found it in Madrid.

The listener who needs a chorus to hold onto.

The Hexagons Pavilion opens for restoration visits, three days only, before it disappears back behind scaffolding
A rare, guided window into the restoration work on one of Casa de Campo's more overlooked structures, open for three days before it's sealed off again. Not something you'd stumble on just wandering the park. The Ministerio de Cultura's restoration is live now, and this is the chance to be inside it while the scaffolding is still up.

Anyone who has walked past that wreck in the Casa de Campo without knowing it's one of the most admired Spanish buildings of the century.

Head there in the morning for the workshops. They're the best part of the programme and the first to fill. Afternoons draw a bigger crowd once families arrive after lunch.

Parents looking for a genuinely engaging, screen-free weekend activity.

Balenciaga and Fortuny share a room at the Museo del Traje, two very different ideas of what fabric can do
A pairing exhibition setting Balenciaga's sculptural precision against Fortuny's pleated, almost liquid draping. Two entirely different approaches to fabric under one roof. The national costume museum holds 160,000 pieces and gives both designers monographic space of their own. Most people who've done the Prado twice have never once considered this.
The Edit Move
Go on a Sunday morning when it costs nothing, start at the Balenciaga room rather than the chronological beginning, then use the multi-sensory area, where you can handle fabrics and try on a miriñaque. Grown adults are allowed.

Fashion and design readers, and anyone who wants to understand construction rather than just look at clothes.

Not for anyone after a quick, casual browse; this rewards slowing down.

Carmen Laffón's last week at the Thyssen before this show comes down for good
One of the great Sevillian painters of light and landscape, and this is the final week to see the show before it's gone for good. Carmen Laffón spent her career working the same coastal landscapes and interiors over and over, in a language closer to quiet observation than statement. This week is your last real window before the closing crowd shows up.

Go in the last hour before closing on a weekday. The Thyssen's crowds thin out noticeably by late afternoon.
For who it is
Painting purists, and anyone who wants to see Spanish modern art outside the usual three names.

Anyone wanting a quick look show. This is worth real time.

Manon Lescaut opens at Teatro Real, the biggest, most formal night of the week, and it opens the thirtieth season since the reopening
Puccini's opera opens the week's biggest, most formal night out, exactly the kind of grand, expensive evening that earns its place here without needing to pretend to be a hidden find.
This is a new production, Nicola Luisotti conducting, Carlos Wagner directing, Sondra Radvanovsky and Michael Fabiano leading the cast. Manon Lescaut hasn't been staged at the Real since 1893's premiere run essentially ended, over a hundred years ago, and this is the show chosen to reopen the house's main stage for the year.

Get there early and walk the horseshoe foyer with a drink before the bell.
For who it is
Anyone who has lived here for years, walked past that building constantly, and never once gone in.
For who it is not
Anyone wanting a short first opera. This one runs long and earns it, but it's a commitment.
ON THE HORIZON
María Pagés premieres Bilbao Square at Centro Danza Matadero from 25 September, choreographing her own migration story from Seville to Madrid on the stage of the building she runs.
Nascencia, Ballet Español de la Comunidad de Madrid, opens its season at Teatros del Canal on 24 September, told entirely through movement with no dialogue to translate.
