THE EDITORIAL
The eclipse has passed. What's left is simpler and, frankly, better: the city's biggest fiesta of the summer, a cloister that has quietly become Madrid's most reliable stage, and a week built for staying out late without needing an excuse.
La Paloma is the one the other two verbenas were warming up for. The Virgen is carried through La Latina by the city's own firefighters while half of Madrid watches from Las Vistillas, and there's an entire zarzuela named after the party, which tells you how long this city has loved it. A few streets away and a few nights later, the cloister on Calle Toledo keeps doing what it's done all summer: offering great shows.
We did the work of finding the ones worth staying out for, so you don't have to sift through a hundred listings to land on the ones that matter.
AT A GLANCE
The big one: La Paloma takes over La Latina from Friday to Monday, with the procession on Saturday the 15th the highlight of the Madrid summer calendar.
The cloister, still going: Antonio Lizana opens the week on sax and flamenco, Teresinha Landeiro brings fado on the Friday, and Iván "Melón" Lewis closes it with an unrehearsed jazz jam on the Tuesday.
The meta pick: A night of zarzuela in the cloister on the same evening as the real Paloma procession outside, including songs from the opera named after the fiesta itself.

On the 15th the Virgen de la Paloma, patron of Madrid's firefighters, is carried through La Latina by the bomberos themselves while half the city watches from Las Vistillas. There is a zarzuela named after this party. It earned it.

Lizana works flamenco through a sax and jazz sensibility, opening La Paloma week on a different note from the singers who filled this cloister earlier in the summer.

Saudade in a stone courtyard, two streets from the loudest party in Madrid
One of the young voices renewing fado in Lisbon, singing in a candlelit courtyard in the middle of La Paloma week. Sung in Portuguese, which is the point. Fado needs no translation to land.

Take the contrast on purpose. An hour of saudade in the cloister, then straight out the door into the loudest verbena of the year two streets away.

A concert named after the fiesta happening ten minutes downhill
Soprano Carmen Avivar, tenor Eduardo Sandoval and pianist José Ramón Martín perform on the most castizo day in the Madrid calendar. There is a zarzuela called La Verbena de la Paloma, and this concert happens while the real one is at full volume ten minutes downhill.

For who it is
Anyone who's heard zarzuela called the city's own art form and never actually sat through any.

Anyone who needs a full staged production. This is voices and a piano, an evening of songs rather than a story.

A proper jam session, not a concert. The Grammy-winning Cuban pianist Iván "Melón" Lewis hosts, and whoever's in town sits in. In a festival full of fixed programmes, that's the whole appeal.

Tuesday after La Paloma weekend is when the city exhales. Fifteen euros for open-ended jazz in a cloister is the softest possible landing.

Night owls who prefer their music unrehearsed and their venues sixteenth century.

Anyone who wants a set list and a known quantity. A jam by definition promises neither.

The film that sends you home wanting to argue about it
Bound, the 1996 lesbian crime thriller the Wachowskis made three years before The Matrix, and one most people have still never seen. It's the sixth and final night of Cine Caliente, closing a strand on twenty-first century queer cinema. Screened outdoors under the trees with live music and invited commentators, subtitled.
The Edit Move
Every other film in this summer's cycle was one people already knew. This is the one that sends you home wanting to argue about it, and it's the last night, so there's no next Tuesday to catch it.
For who it is
Readers who like a crime film with actual style, and anyone who only knows the Wachowskis from what came after.

Anyone who wants comfort viewing under the stars. This is a tense, violent noir, and it will not sit gently after dinner.
