THE EDITORIAL
Madrid does not usually go dark at half past eight on a Wednesday evening. This week it will. The first total solar eclipse to cross mainland Spain in 121 years clips the northern edge of the region, and even from the city centre the sky will collapse into something close to false dusk. It's brief and it's free, as long as you're standing on the right terrace with the right glasses.
The rest of the week stays on the ground. San Cayetano's fiesta hands over to San Lorenzo in Lavapiés, the cuplé and the café cantante get revived in the same cloister on Calle Toledo that's carried this summer's music, and a municipal photography show sits two empty floors above a courtyard nobody visits in August.
We did the work of finding the ones worth staying in town for, so you don't have to sift through a hundred listings to land on the ones that matter.

The city that stays throws its own party
Madrid's three castizo verbenas run back to back through mid-August: San Cayetano in the Rastro, San Lorenzo in Lavapiés, then La Paloma the week after. Paper garlands over the streets, chotis and limonada by the jug, neighbours dancing where their grandparents danced.

Skip the main squares at peak hour and drift the side streets. Calle del Oso has decorated for these fiestas for 45 years running, and that's where the real business happens.

The singing cafés of old Madrid, staged where they actually stood
El Rumor de los Cafés resurrects the café cantante, the singing cafés where Madrid's musical life happened before venues existed, a few streets from where those cafés actually stood. Performed in Spanish. The songs carry it, but non-Spanish speakers will miss the patter between them.

Cheeky, sentimental, and almost extinct outside a handful of voices
Aquellos Cuplés de Madrid, sung by the last serious custodian of the form, on the opening night of San Lorenzo. Cuplé was the popular song of Madrid before the Civil War, and Ramos inherited it directly. Sign language interpretation provided.

A wait of over a century, and the city sits just outside the good seats
The first total solar eclipse over mainland Spain in more than a hundred years, and the band of totality clips the northern edge of the region, giving up to 90 seconds of full darkness in the Sierra. The city itself sits at 99.8 per cent, meaning no corona and no true night, but a sharp drop in light and temperature at half past eight. Certified ISO 12312-2 glasses are mandatory the entire time.

Decide now. The two options are genuinely different events. Stay in the city for a false dusk over the Casa de Campo, free and easy. Drive north for the corona and the thing people talk about for years, but leave the day before or very early. The A1 and A6 will be a car park by mid-afternoon. Buy the glasses this week, not on the day.

The centre argues with the periphery, and nobody's in the room to referee
PHotoESPAÑA group show reading Madrid through the museum's own photography collection. García-Alix, José Manuel Ballester and Ángel Marcos hang in the same room. It runs until February, so the hook isn't urgency, it's that the MAC in August is empty, free and two floors above a courtyard nobody visits.
