THE EDITORIAL
Friday 15 May is the reason the week exists. Be at the Pradera around 10:00: limonada, chotis, the city before it becomes a crowd. Leave by 13:00. Everything else is in our full guide.
The rest of the week earns its place.
Thursday evening, Laura Ramírez Ashbaugh closes a two-night world premiere at Conde Duque: it’s the last chance. Saturday splits well: Veronica Swift at Sala Villanos for the jazz listener who books ahead, Rumbón de Esquina at La Parcería for everyone else: free, vinyl, fifteen years of bolero and salsa in Embajadores. Sunday: Honey Dijon headlines at Caja Mágica, with DJ Boring B2B DJ Seinfeld before her. The outdoor format works in May and this is the stronger of the two weekends.
PHotoESPAÑA has opened its main season. Isabel Azkarate has just opened at Serrería Belga. Ugo Mulas opens at Parra & Romero. Viviane Sassen arrives at Fernán Gómez on 3 June, so keep that one for later. And Naturaleza de asfalto at the Museo de Historia closes on 24 May: this is the last full week.
There is a specific grace in a Madrid May that belongs only to those who stay.

The Venice Biennale as it looked before the art world became what it is now
Ugo Mulas photographed the Venice Biennale from 1954 to 1972. The images at Parra & Romero are a technical and atmospheric record of an institution in the process of forming itself.
The Edit Move
Visit in the morning to enjoy the exhibitions in the Picasso room, then stay for a coffee in the elegant La Pecera café. It is a timeless experience that feels both historic and fresh.
The Edit Move
Go to the opening reception on Thursday 14 May, 19:00–21:00. After that, save it for a morning when you already have a reason to be in Salamanca.

WHEN: Opens Thursday 14 May. Until 28 June.
PRICE: Free
WEB: serreriabelga.com
Forty years of street photography in direct conversation with a smartphone
Isabel Azkarate was the first female photojournalist in the Basque Country. The show places her archive alongside recent images she shot on a smartphone.
The tension between analogue legacy and mobile present is the actual story. There is also a photobook room for those who collect or browse. The reason to go now is that it just opened.
The Edit Move
Go this week while it is fresh.
For who it is
For photography people and anyone interested in documentary history, Basque culture, or what changes and what does not when you swap a film camera for a phone. Photobook browsers will value the second room.
For who it is not
Not a night-out destination. Daytime or early evening.
CELEBRATION
THE EVENT: San Isidro: The Pradera
WHERE: Pradera de San Isidro
WHEN: Friday 15 May, from 10:00
PRICE: Free
The one morning of the year when the city is entirely itself
We covered San Isidro in full in our dedicated guide, but Friday 15 May is the heart of the ritual. This is the moment to witness Madrid’s most authentic folk celebration before the midday heat and the larger crowds take over. It is honest, unmediated, and essential.
The Edit Move
Take the Metro to Marqués de Vadillo and arrive by 10h. Enjoy a glass of limonada without ice, find a spot to watch the chotis near the chapel, and make your exit by 13h. Everything you need for the day is in the guide.
For who it is
The resident who understands that San Isidro Day is a local ritual rather than a tourist event.
For who it is not
Anyone looking for a quiet, curated cultural experience. This is the real thing.

WHERE: Desperate Literature, Cava Baja 8

PRICE: Free
INFO: desperateliterature.com
Brazilian concrete poetry in a bookshop with thirty seats
Odile Cisneros and Robin Munby present the new translation of Galáxias at Desperate Literature. Haroldo de Campos was a master of experimental modernism, and hearing this work in an intimate setting is a rare high-culture win. The room holds exactly thirty people.
The Edit Move
The armchairs at the back are usually claimed first, so arrive 30 minutes early to browse the shelves and secure your spot.
For who it is
The reader who knows why Haroldo de Campos matters, or wants to find out in the best room in the city.
For who it is not
Anyone seeking an easy, accessible entry point into poetry.

WHERE: Sala Villanos, Calle de Bernardino Obregón 18, Arganzuela
WHEN: Saturday 16 May, 21:00 h
PRICE: From 25€
BOOK: salavillanos.es
A focused concert in a small room before the world hears the record
Veronica Swift is touring ahead of her new album, Home, which drops in June. This Madrid date is a rare chance to catch a performer who has toured with Wynton Marsalis and holds a twice-yearly residency at Birdland. Sala Villanos provides the perfect acoustic weight for her range.
The Edit Move
Start with dinner at Yeca Street Food just around the corner for a casual but excellent preamble. Book your tickets now; this will sell out.
For who it is
The jazz listener who appreciates a focused concert in an intimate setting.
For who it is not
Anyone looking for background music or a casual drop-in. You go here to listen.
EVENTS
THE EVENT: PHotoESPAÑA 2026: Netherlands Focus
WHERE: Multiple locations / Centro Cultural Fernán Gómez
WHEN: 13 May to 13 September. LUX & UMBRA opens 3 June and runs until 26 July.
WEB: phe.es
The festival has opened. The headline act arrives in June.
PHotoESPAÑA 2026 has begun, with the Netherlands as invited country and nearly four months of exhibitions across the city.
That is the angle. Not “another big photography festival”, but a genuine first. The headline act, Virginia Sassen’s world of surreal colour, bodies, shadow and light needs scale, and Fernán Gómez will show it from 3 June. But the festival has started, so this is the moment to put it on the map.
The Edit Move
Flag it now, but do not turn up yet. Use this week to start with Isabel Azkarate at Serrería Belga or Ugo Mulas at Parra & Romero, then keep Sassen for early June.
For who it is
Anyone who follows contemporary photography, especially Sassen’s treatment of colour, bodies and light. Also anyone curious about the Netherlands focus at PHotoESPAÑA 2026.
For who it is not
Anyone looking for one tight, self-contained hour this week. PHotoESPAÑA sprawls, and Sassen is still a save-the-date rather than a same-week visit.
EVENTS
THE EVENT: Offline Reading Party
WHERE: Yoyogi Coffee, Chamberí
WHEN: Thursday 14 May, 19:00
PRICE: TBC
WEB: theoffline-club.com
One hour of silence, then conversation
This is a beautiful response to digital fatigue. The rules are simple: no phones and no small talk. You bring a physical book and share an hour of silent reading with others. It is a quiet reclamation of our attention span in a space designed for focus. After the hour ends, the silence breaks for light conversation with fellow readers. It is a lovely way to meet the city’s intellectual community without the pressure of a traditional social event.
The Edit Move
Arrive fifteen minutes early to secure a comfortable corner and order your coffee before the silence begins. Yoyogi has a precise approach to their craft that suits the mood. After the event, walk through the quiet streets of Chamberí toward Sagasta. The transition from the silent room to the soft evening air is the best part of the ritual.
For who it is
For the digitally fatigued resident who wants to reclaim an hour.
For who it is not
For anyone who needs background noise to concentrate.
MUSIC/DANCE
THE EVENT: Rumbón de Esquina: La Parceria 15 Years
WHERE: La Parceria, Calle Martín de Vargas 13, Embajadores
WHEN: Saturday 16 May, 21:00 h
PRICE: Free
Fifteen years of bolero, salsa, and tango played on vinyl
La Parceria celebrates its anniversary in a space that genuinely feels like a private living room. Expect bolero, salsa, and tango played exclusively on vinyl. The atmosphere is built on community and collective joy rather than a commercial concept. No brand, no stage, just the music.
The Edit Move
Have a cocktail at Scratch around 19:30 h, then walk over to Embajadores for 21:00 h. There are no tickets or queues: just show up and join the room.
For who it is
For anyone who dances, or wishes they did. It is a night that feels like Buenos Aires and Lavapiés at the same time.
For who it is not
Anyone who needs a large room or a professional club sound system.
MUSIC
THE EVENT: Brunch Electronik: Honey Dijon
WHERE: Caja Mágica, Camino de Perales s/n, Usera
WHEN: Sunday 17 May, 16:00 h to 23:00 h
PRICE: From 25€
Sunday is the one
Honey Dijon headlines the second weekend of the spring season, supported by a DJ Boring B2B DJ Seinfeld set. This Sunday is the stronger card: less commercial house, more underground aesthetics. The open-air format at the Caja Mágica is the best way to enjoy a May afternoon.
The Edit Move
Arrive before 17:00, not for the closing rush. Caja Mágica works best while there is still light on the concrete. Bring sunglasses, water, and accept that Monday will not be your sharpest morning.
For who it is
The electronic music listener who wants a serious outdoor programme without a festival crowd.
For who it is not
Those who prefer a dark, intimate club environment.
SPORT
THE EVENT: Hipódromo de la Zarzuela: Spring Season
WHERE: Hipódromo de la Zarzuela, Carretera de La Coruña km 8
WHEN: Sundays through late June (17, 24, and 31 May)
PRICE: 15€ General / Free shuttle from Moncloa
110 hectares of green and a building nobody talks about
Eduardo Torroja’s reinforced-concrete grandstands are a masterpiece of 1940s engineering. The racecourse sits on a vast green space just 8km from the centre, offering a Sunday morning that feels entirely outside the usual urban circuit. Whether you bet is your decision; the architecture alone justifies the trip.
The Edit Move
Use the free shuttle bus from Paseo Moret in Moncloa, departing one hour before the first race. Book the Hipotour for 10:30 h to spend an hour with a professional jockey before the gates open.
For who it is
The resident looking for a unique Sunday morning away from the city centre.
For who it is not
Anyone who requires a fast-paced urban environment.
EXHIBITION
THE EVENT: Naturaleza de Asfalto: Madrid Hiperrealista
WHERE: Museo de Historia de Madrid, Calle de Fuencarral 78
WHEN: until 24 May, Tue to Sun, 10:00-20:00, free
PRICE: Free
The final week before it closes
This hyperrealist study of Madrid’s streets and facades closes on 24 May. The Museo de Historia is one of the city's best-kept secrets: a stunning 18th-century building documenting Madrid since the 1500s. The 1830 scale model of the city in the permanent collection is worth the visit alone.
The Edit Move
Visit on a weekday morning when the museum is quietest. Spend time in the permanent galleries after the temporary exhibition to see how the city's physical form has evolved.
For who it is
The observer with a genuine interest in the physical history of Madrid.
For who it is not
Anyone expecting a high-production, major institution experience.
STILL GOING: ONE REASON TO GO NOW
Aurèlia Muñoz: Seres at the Museo Reina Sofía
Aurèlia Muñoz. Beings / Entes, running 29 Apr to 7 Sept. Free day May 18.
The city exhales after the San Isidro rush and this will be the quietest the building is all month. It is the perfect moment for a silent second visit. entradas.museoreinasofia.es
