AT A GLANCE
Best booking: Orchestra soloists, Teatro Real — 22 March, 12:00 h
Best neighbourhood drift: La Latina to Lavapiés on foot, Sunday 29 March, before the processions reach Sol
Best with kids: La Borriquita, Domingo de Ramos — 29 March, 15:15 h from the Almudena
Best design hit: Teatros del Canal free visit, 23 or 27 March
One thing to skip: Driving anywhere near the historic centre from 27 March. The procession routes close Calle Mayor, Sol, Plaza Mayor and Calle Bailén from the afternoon. Take the metro or walk.
THE EDITORIAL
The city does not announce the change. The terraces stay open, the zinc bars run their usual hours, and on the surface nothing appears to shift. Then you notice the floristerías working at midnight on Thursday, and the smell of incense somewhere around La Latina, and the first drum, distant, on Friday evening. That is when you understand that Madrid has been here before, five hundred years before- and knows exactly what it is doing.
This is the week that separates the people who live in Madrid from the people who happen to be in it. Use it correctly.
THE CURATION
EXHIBITION | The last ten days of something that will not return [LAST CHANCE]
The Context
Grada Kilomba's first solo exhibition in Spain, Opera to a Black Venus, occupies the Sabatini building of the Reina Sofía until 31 March.
The Portuguese artist builds a futuristic landscape from which the ocean has withdrawn — leaving behind the accumulated weight of what it carried: colonialism, displacement, memory, resilience. Performance, video installation, textile, sound. A full floor of the Sabatini given over to one sustained argument. It closes in nine days and will not travel back to Madrid.
Essential Details
THE EXHIBITION: Opera to a Black Venus — Grada Kilomba
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Lavapiés, Paseo del Arte
WHEN: Until 31 March 2026
PRICE / BOOKING: From 12 euros / museoreinasofia.es.
Free Monday to Friday 19:00–21:00 and Saturday 14:30–21:00
OFFICIAL: museoreinasofia.es
The Edit Move
Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning, third floor, Sabatini building. The rooms open sequentially — follow them in order. The central video installation, Opera to a Black Venus, runs approximately 40 minutes. Stay for it. Do not check your phone. The work that closes the exhibition, Compressed Time, needs five minutes of stillness to land properly. If you have already been, go again — the final week of an exhibition this size in a near-empty room is a different experience from opening month.
For who it is | For who it is not
For the person who lives here and takes their cultural consumption seriously enough to see something before it disappears rather than after. Not for those looking for an afternoon of pleasant, framed paintings. This is demanding work and it earns the demand.
THEATRE | The night Madrid opens its stages for free [BOOK NOW]
The Context
The 27 March, Madrid celebrates the World Theatre Day with a full programme across the Teatro Español, the Naves del Español at Matadero and the Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa, with private theatres offering 25 to 50 percent discounts on performances.
The Teatros del Canal offers free guided visits on 23 and 27 March, allowing access to spaces usually closed to the public.
That night, Malena Alterio and Carmen Ruiz perform La vida extraordinaria, directed by Mariano Tenconi Blanco, followed by a public conversation with the company.
Essential Details
THE EVENT: Día Mundial del Teatro — Noche de los Teatros
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Multiple — Canal (Chamberí), Matadero (Arganzuela), Huertas
WHEN: 27 March 2026
PRICE / BOOKING: Free visits at Teatros del Canal. 25-50% off most shows — check individual venues at teatrosdelcanal.com and teatroespanol.es
OFFICIAL: comunidad.madrid/teatralia
The Edit Move
Book the free guided visit at Teatros del Canal for the 27 March slot — these fill quickly. Then use the discount on whichever evening show fits the time. La vida extraordinaria at Teatros del Canal is the strongest programme choice of the night: serious contemporary theatre, confirmed cast, public conversation after. Dinner after at something in Chamberí that stays open past midnight.
For who it is | For who it is not
For the person who goes to the theatre regularly and wants to use this week to see something they would not normally prioritise. Not for those who need a familiar genre or a show with interval drinks and a clear narrative.
MUSIC | The organ at San Ginés, three nights
The Context
The 19th Organ Music Cycle at the Iglesia de San Ginés returns for three nights across this week. The cycle includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach, César Franck, Rauno Remme, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Georg F. Handel, performed on 24, 27 and 31 March at the Iglesia de San Ginés.
San Ginés sits on Calle Arenal, a five-minute walk from Sol, open since the 9th century in various forms. The acoustics have never been optimised for anything other than exactly this.
Essential Details
THE EVENT: XIX Ciclo Música de Órgano — Iglesia de San Ginés
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Centro, Calle Arenal 13
WHEN: 24, 27 and 31 March 2026
PRICE / BOOKING: Free entry, limited capacity — arrive 20 minutes early
OFFICIAL: parroquiasanginesmadrid.es
The Edit Move
The 27 March date has the strongest programme and coincides with the Noche de los Teatros: use both. Sit in the first six rows for the best direct organ sound. The church runs at around 14 degrees regardless of outside temperature; bring a layer. Stay until the last note. The silence after is part of the experience.
For who it is | For who it is not
For the person who understands that free admission to a 9th-century church with a serious organ programme in the week before Semana Santa is one of the specific pleasures this city offers without advertising it. Not for those who need comfortable seating.
GASTRONOMY | The torrija question, answered
The Context
The Ruta Dulces Pasiones brings together a selection of pastelerías, panaderías and restaurants offering classic and innovative versions of the torrija until 5 April 2026.
The torrija is not a dessert in Madrid. It is a seasonal event with a competitive architecture, a winner announced annually, and strong opinions about milk versus wine, brioche versus pan de molde, and whether caramelising the surface is cheating. The 2026 winners: La Raspa VK at the Mercado de Numancia for the best traditional torrija, and Plademunt in Alcalá de Henares for innovation.
Essential Details
THE ROUTE: Ruta Dulces Pasiones 2026
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Citywide — over 50 participating establishments
WHEN: Until 5 April 2026 PRICE: From 2.50 euros per unit
OFFICIAL: madrid.es/semadasanta (full map of participating establishments)
The Edit Move
Three addresses worth the detour. El Riojano on Calle Mayor has won awards for its traditional torrija made without artifice — milk, wine, bread, nothing else.
La Duquesita on Fernando VI does a brioche-based version with a long fermentation that justifies the queue. La Raspa VK at the Mercado de Numancia in Vallecas is the 2026 contest winner — worth the metro ride south. Eat them standing. This is not a table situation.
For who it is | For who it is not
For the person who wants to eat something specific to this city at the specific week of the year when it means something. Not for those who approach pastelerías with dietary conditions listed in advance.
SEMANA SANTA | The week the city becomes itself [BOOK NOW]
The Context
Semana Santa 2026 in Madrid opens officially on Friday 27 March with the first processions at dusk, and runs through to Sunday 5 April.
Madrid's Holy Week has its own register — more contained than Sevilla, more neighbourhood-specific than Málaga, and shaped by centuries of cofradías whose routes through the historic centre have barely changed. The Ayuntamiento has expanded the seating area at Puerta del Sol to 500 places, with free access until capacity, entry from Calle Carretas. The drums begin at dusk on Friday 27 March. The city does not need to explain it.
Essential Details
THE EVENT: Semana Santa Madrid 2026
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Centro, La Latina, Lavapiés — historic centre
WHEN: 27 March to 5 April 2026. Opening processions 27 March from 19:30 h
PRICE / BOOKING: Free — all processions open to the public
OFFICIAL: diario.madrid.es (official programme with full routes and times)
The Edit Move
For the opening: position yourself on Calle Mayor or Plaza de la Villa for the first processions on Friday 27 March from 19:30 h.
For Domingo de Ramos, La Borriquita leaves the Catedral de la Almudena at 15:15 h and processes through Bailén, Calle Mayor, Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and Preciados to San Ildefonso.
The intersection of Calle Mayor and Plaza de la Villa gives you the procession, the saeta from the balcony at 19:30 h, and the architecture of old Madrid in one position. Arrive an hour early. Leave the car at home: the entire historic centre closes progressively from mid-afternoon.
For who it is | For who it is not
For anyone who lives in Madrid and has not yet stood in Calle Mayor on a Holy Week evening when the drums are close and the incense moves through the cold air. This is not a religious experience unless you want it to be. It is a Madrid experience, which is a different thing entirely. Not for those who treat the processions as a photo opportunity and leave.
KIDS | The procession built for them [FAMILY]
The Context
La Borriquita on Domingo de Ramos is consistently recommended for families with children for its daytime schedule and festive atmosphere. The image of Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey leads the procession: palms are distributed along the route, the atmosphere is more celebration than solemnity, and the children in the watching crowd outnumber the adults in most stretches. It is the correct introduction to what Semana Santa is before they are old enough for the gravity of Thursday and Friday.
Essential Details
THE EVENT: Procesión de La Borriquita — Domingo de Ramos
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Centro — route: Almudena, Bailén, Mayor, Sol, Preciados, San Ildefonso
WHEN: 29 March 2026, 15:15 h PRICE / BOOKING: Free
OFFICIAL: diario.madrid.es
The Edit Move
Station yourselves on Calle Preciados or the approach to Sol — the procession arrives here around 17:00-17:30 h, which means the children have eaten lunch and are not yet exhausted. Palms and olive branches are handed out freely along the route. Afterwards, walk up to Gran Vía and find somewhere for a merienda. The city at 18:00 h on Domingo de Ramos, with palm fronds still in everyone's hands, is a specific Madrid scene.
For who it is | For who it is not
For families who want their children to see something genuinely rooted in the place they are growing up in. Not for those looking for an activity that keeps children contained in one place for more than 20 minutes — a procession requires walking, waiting and looking up.
MUSIC | Sunday morning at the Teatro Real, chamber edition
The Context
The soloists of the Teatro Real's resident orchestra perform on 22 March at 12:00 h, with the composers of the season's operas, including Bartók, Britten and Prokofiev as the central programme. Chamber music in the Real on a Sunday morning at noon is one of the better-kept secrets of the venue's calendar. The main hall for a fraction of the ticket price, the audience a fraction of the usual size.
Essential Details
THE EVENT: Soloists of the Orquesta Titular del Teatro Real
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Centro, Plaza de Isabel II
WHEN: 22 March 2026, 12:00 h
PRICE / BOOKING: From 18 euros / ftr-oneclick.shop.secutix.com
OFFICIAL: teatroreal.es
The Edit Move
Buy the cheapest tickets: the Sunday morning programme does not require a specific acoustic position. Arrive on foot from the Plaza Mayor side. Have lunch after in La Latina. The Sunday rhythm of Calle Cava Baja at 14:00 h, after an hour of chamber music, is close to the correct Sunday in Madrid.
For who it is | For who it is not
For the person who wants to be inside the Teatro Real without the full ceremony of an evening opera. Not for those who need a full programme and an interval to justify the ticket.
