THE EDITORIAL
The first two weeks of February in Madrid are a test of character. The Christmas lights are long gone, the sales are dregs, and the wind on Castellana cuts through wool. But this is visually the sharpest month. The sky is a hard, saturated azure and the city retreats indoors to eat heavy things. We are focusing this week on the tail end of game season (temporada de caza), a silent neo-Byzantine escape in Atocha, and the strategic way to handle the almond blossoms without fighting an influencer for a photo.
AT A GLANCE
Best booking: I masnadieri (Teatro Real, 10–14 Feb)
Best design hit: Madrid Design Festival starts 5 Feb
Best neighbourhood drift: Carabanchel
Best with kids: El Real Junior: Lazarillo (31 Jan–8 Feb)
One thing to skip: weekend museum hours
THE CURATION
DESIGN | Madrid Design Festival 2026
THE EVENT / PLACE: MDF26 Main Exhibitions
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Salamanca / Centro (Fernán Gómez)
WHEN: 01 Feb – 31 Mar
PRICE / BOOKING: €10 approx (Check specific venues)
THE CONTEXT: MDF turns the city into a showroom, the scale often overwhelms so we focus on the Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa. The exhibitions here anchor the festival. Expect a focus on sustainable materials. Expect Iberian craft.
THE EDIT MOVE: Go on a Tuesday morning. The underground theatre dampens sound. The acoustics are profound. Avoid the weekends.
GASTRONOMY | The End of the Hunt
THE EVENT / PLACE: Lakasa
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Chamberí
WHEN: Lunch is superior for heavy dishes.
BOOKING: Essential. 1 week ahead.
THE CONTEXT: César Martín runs one of the few kitchens that treats game meat with the reverence it deserves. We are in the final weeks of the season. The menu changes daily, but the philosophy—product first, ego second—remains constant.
THE EDIT MOVE: We suggest ordering media raciones (half portions) of everything on the "Caza" (Game) insert. Specifically, look for the Liebre a la Royal (Royal Hare). It is intense, dark, and requires a nap afterwards. Pair with a lighter Garnacha from Gredos to cut the fat.
FAMILY | The Glass Cathedral
THE EVENT / PLACE: Museo Geominero
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Chamberí (Ríos Rosas)
WHEN: Daily until 14:00 (Sundays included).
BOOKING: Walk-in. Free.
THE CONTEXT: Forget the science museums with the flashing lights and screaming children. This is a 1920s architectural jewel with three tiers of wooden balconies under a stained-glass canopy. It looks like a library from a fantasy novel.
THE EDIT MOVE: This is for parents who need silence. The acoustics absorb sound. The kids can look at the pyrite and fossils (which are genuinely cool); you can sit on the velvet benches and admire the ironwork. It is warm, free, and civilised. Go at 12:00, then walk to La Mina on Calle del General Álvarez de Castro for vermouth.
ATMOSPHERE | The Marble Mausoleum
THE EVENT / PLACE: Panteón de España
WHEN: Tuesday - Sunday, 10:00 - 15:00.
THE CONTEXT: While the tourists are queuing for the Reina Sofia, this Neo-Byzantine masterpiece sits empty five minutes away. It houses the tombs of Spanish politicians, but the draw is the architecture: white marble, mosaics, and a courtyard that feels miles away from the city.
THE EDIT MOVE: Go on a sunny day. The light hitting the statue of Liberty (yes, Madrid has one) in the courtyard creates a stark, high-contrast shadow perfect for photography. It takes twenty minutes to see, which is the perfect amount of time.
DRINK | Vinyl & Wax
THE EVENT / PLACE: Gota Wine
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Salesas
WHEN: Evenings, from 19:00.
BOOKING: Walk-in only (go early).
THE CONTEXT: A listening bar that avoids the pretension usually associated with listening bars. The sound system is high-fidelity, the records are eclectic, and they brew their own kombucha (though you are here for the natural wine).
THE EDIT MOVE: The acoustics are designed for conversation, not shouting. Ask for a glass of something volcanic from Tenerife. Order the homemade butter and anchovies. Do not ask for a specific song; trust the selector.
SHOPPING | The Proper Rastro
THE EVENT / PLACE: Tiempos Modernos
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Justicia
WHEN: Monday - Saturday.
THE CONTEXT: An antiques shop that specializes in the 20th century. Art Deco, 50s design, and rare ceramics. It feels less like a shop and more like the living room of a wealthy, eccentric aunt.
THE EDIT MOVE: You don’t need to buy a sideboard. Look at the selection of vintage posters and graphic design prints near the back. They make excellent, specific gifts that don't scream "souvenir."
NATURE | The Almond Window
THE EVENT / PLACE: Quinta de los Molinos NEIGHBOURHOOD: San Blas / El Salvador
WHEN: Daily, 6:30 – 22:00 (Target: 4-10 February)
BOOKING: Free access.
THE CONTEXT: Maybe it’s too early with this cold but every year, 1500 almond trees bloom here. It is spectacular. It is also usually a nightmare of tripods and picnics. The "white snow" of the petals only lasts about two weeks. THE EDIT MOVE: Do not go on the weekend because it’s a bit too busy. Go on Tuesday or Wednesday morning at 9 AM, hopefully you can take your calls from there. Enter via Calle Alcalá, turn immediately right into the northern zone (less dense, fewer people). Walk for twenty minutes, then leave before the school groups arrive at 10:30.
FAMILY & KIDS | Theatre with standards: Lazarillo (El Real Junior)
THE EVENT / PLACE: Lazarillo (El Real Junior / Teatro Real)
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Retiro
WHEN: 31 Jan–8 Feb 2026
THE CONTEXT: This isn’t loud “kids content.” It’s theatre made with dignity. Children feel it instantly.
THE EDIT MOVE: Book a matinee. Then walk straight into Retiro and let them run. Don’t over-programme the day.
FAMILY & KIDS | Teatro de Títeres de El Retiro
THE EVENT / PLACE: Outdoor Puppet Theatre
NEIGHBOURHOOD: El Retiro Park
WHEN: Sat/Sun mornings (Check listings)
THE CONTEXT: A permanent stone amphitheatre for puppets. It is a serious institution. The shows are often weird. They are artistic. They respect the child’s intelligence. It sits under the winter trees.
THE EDIT MOVE: Dress the kids in layers. The stone benches conduct the cold. Bring a blanket.
(If you try one move, reply and tell us what happened. We read everything.)

DEEP DIVE: The Physics of the "Friolero"
Madrid cold is not European cold. It is dry. It is high-altitude. It cuts. Madrileños classify themselves as frioleros (sensitive to cold) with pride.
The physics of the city change in February. The wind tunnels formed by the avenues of Salamanca accelerate the air. The narrow streets of Malasaña trap the damp. Survival this month requires the local strategy: thermal layering and heavy caloric intake.
We stop eating salads and start eating cocido. We stop drinking gin on terraces drink and get a vermut inside. We stand under fluorescent lights and pack together for warmth. The city becomes smaller and denser. It improves because it stops performing for tourists and starts surviving for itself.
Forward this to one person you trust. Just one :) We prefer Madrid liveable.
